Tulum is faster, more social, more designed. Restaurants that require a reservation two months out. Beach clubs, full-moon parties, ruin tours. If you want a busy vacation with the ocean ten steps from your hotel, pick Tulum.
Bacalar is slower. The lagoon instead of the sea, a town instead of a beach strip, a pace that takes a day to settle into. Fewer restaurants, fewer things on a schedule. If you want to read and kayak and eat well and not think about where to be, pick Bacalar.
The two are about three hours apart. Plenty of guests do both — a few loud days in Tulum, a few quiet ones here.
