For a few weeks, the jungle has its own light.
Most of the year, the jungle at night is just dark. You hear it more than you see it — a cicada, something moving in the leaves.
In late May, or June, or the start of July, the fireflies come back. For a few weeks, the path from the dock to the buildings has its own light. Slow at first, and if you keep standing there, denser.
It's tied to the rain. A wet year brings them early; a dry year brings them late. The hour is more reliable than the calendar — about thirty minutes after sunset, until nine.
Don't use a flashlight. Don't use your phone. The light stops the display for several minutes. Let your eyes adjust; the sky is usually enough.
Stand still. Fireflies read motion. If you keep walking, most of them stay away. If you stop for two minutes, they don't.
